Testing for Vision Therapy

Before any treatment can begin we do extensive testing over several visits. There are many visual skills required for learning that are not typically tested in an eye exam. This is why the Visual Perceptual testing is valuable. It allows patients and their family to understand their visual problems at a deeper level. There are multiple steps needed to determine if the patient would benefit from vision therapy.

Step 1 - Exam

The first step is to schedule an exam with Dr. Doud. The importance of this is to understand how the visual system is working. The beginning of our testing starts where most eye exams end. Dr. Doud will take an intensive look at how the eyes focus and work together as a team. He will also look at tracking, peripheral vision and depth perception.

Step 2 - Visual Perceptual Test (VPT)

If the exam reveals any visual issues, the doctor will suggest the Visual Perceptual Testing. This takes about an hour, is done with a vision therapist. It will test for visual spatial reasoning, visual memory, laterality and other areas of visual development.

Step 3 - Next Steps Planing

The consultation is where Dr. Doud reviews the test results and answers any and all questions. Dr. Doud will also recommend the level of therapy that would be most beneficial, based on the test results.
